Let me introduce you to my new favorite party trick… color changing drinks. It started with our daughters birthday. I wanted a drink to change from blue to pink for her princess themed party (think Sleeping Beauty “make it blue, make it pink”) in that search we found this amazing product. Blure butterfly pea flower extract. Just add a few drops of this flavorless extract to a beverage and when something acidic, like lemon or lime juice, is added then it changes colors!

You can order a bottle of this butterfly pea flower extract straight from Amazon with the link below. This small bottle was enough for the drinks for my daughters birthday and to test out these margaritas and we still have plenty left!
My mind went crazy with all the possibilities for drink concoctions, but the one I kept coming back to was a margarita. A margarita is my go to cocktail. All you have to do is add a few drops to your favorite margarita recipe, but make sure to read below because the order of ingredients is important! If you don’t have a favorite margarita recipe we’ve added a classic recipe below.
Start by mixing all margarita ingredients in a cocktail shaker except the lime juice. Then add the desired amount of blure to the shaker. The more drops you add the deeper the colors will be. See below photos of two different amounts. The first set of pictures had 10 drops of blure added. The second set of pictures only had 5 drops.
Next add ice to the shaker and shake until ingredients are combined, and pour mixture into a salt rimmed margarita glass garnished with a lime slice.
Finally, pour the lime juice into the margarita glass and watch as pretty swirls of blue/purple and pink give way to an all pink cocktail.
Want to make this for a big crowd? No problem! Multiply the margarita recipe and amount of blure drops as needed. Mix well in a pitcher. Friends can rim and garnish their margarita glasses and add ice before pouring the blue/purple mixture into their glasses. Set out lime juice in viles on a separate tray. Guests can grab a pre-measured vile and pour it into their drinks. Stand back and enjoy the “oooohhs’s”and “aaahhh’s” of your amazed guests!
We hope you have as much fun with this color changing margarita as we did. Try out the below margarita recipe and let us know what you think!
