Transforming your bedroom into an aesthetic retreat can make a world of difference in how you feel and function. But what exactly does aesthetic room mean? The dictionary definition of aesthetic is simply “appreciative of or responsive to beauty”. So when we are talking about creating aesthetic spaces in your home, what we mean is creating a space that is pleasing to look at and that reflects your personal style.

Whether you’re a minimalist aficionado, a bohemian spirit, or a lover of all things vintage, we’ll explore timeless principles and modern trends to help you craft an aesthetic room that reflects your unique personality and style.

Define Your Aesthetic Vision:

Start by envisioning the aesthetic you want to achieve for your bedroom. Do you prefer a minimalist, Scandinavian-inspired look, or are you drawn to bohemian, eclectic vibes? Gather inspiration from interior design magazines, Pinterest boards, Instagram accounts , or your favorite home decor blog The Weekend Whatnots to help you clarify your vision and identify key elements you want to incorporate into your space. Pay attention to the colors you are drawn to (see step 2), the decor items in the rooms, how spacious or cocoon like the room feels. All of these things will help guide you in the following steps and when making decision for your room.

Create a Relaxing Color Scheme:

Selecting the right color palette is crucial for setting the tone of your bedroom. Opt for soothing, calming hues that promote relaxation and serenity, such as soft neutrals like ivory, beige, or taupe, or gentle pastels like blush pink or powder blue. Search places like Pinterest to find what soothing colors you are drawn too. Consider incorporating accent colors sparingly to add depth and interest to the space without overwhelming the senses. Remember the 60/30/10 rule: 60% should be your dominant color(walls), 30% for a secondary complimentary color(bedding and rugs), and 10% of an accent shade(art and decor).

Invest in Quality Bedding and Linens:

Your bed is the focal point of your bedroom, so investing in high-quality bedding and linens is essential for achieving an aesthetic look and for creating a comfy sleep environment. Choose luxurious sheets made from natural materials like cotton or linen, and layer on a cozy duvet or comforter. Light colored bedding will make a room feel more spacious and open and dark colored bedding will make it feel more cocoon like. If you choose bedding in a similar or complementary shade to the wall color it will also create a cocoon-like comforting space. Choosing traditional patterns or floral bedding will create a more lively space. Patterned bedding can can match the dominant colors in the room or if you want a bold punch of color, use your bedding as an accent color. Finish off the look with decorative pillows and a stylish throw blanket for added texture and visual appeal.

Consider Lighting Options:

Lighting plays a crucial role in creating ambiance and enhancing the aesthetic appeal of your bedroom. Layer different types of lighting sources, such as overhead fixtures, table lamps, floor lamps, and string lights to create a warm, inviting atmosphere. Choosing natural materials like rattan or wood lamp bases will bring  soothing earthy feel to the room. Neon rope light can be added around the room for a more modern minimalistic vibe. Consider installing dimmer switches or smart lighting systems to customize the lighting levels according to your mood and activities, whether it's reading, relaxing, or getting ready for bed.

Add Layers of Texture:

Texture is key to creating a cozy and inviting bedroom. Incorporate various textures through rugs, throw blankets, and decorative pillows to add depth and visual interest to the space. Mix and match different materials like faux fur, knit, and velvet for a tactile experience that begs to be touched. Play with patterns on curtains, lamp shades, bedding and rugs. Patterned wall paper is another way to add texture in your room. A chunky knit throw on the end of a bed, a shag rug, and different fabrics on throw pillows are great ways to layer textures.

Incorporate Natural Elements:

Bring a touch of the outdoors inside by incorporating natural elements into your bedroom decor. Consider adding potted plants, fresh flowers, or a small indoor fountain to infuse the space with life and vitality. Natural materials like wood, stone, and woven rattan can also add warmth and character to your retreat. A rattan laundry basket, marble lamp bases, or wooden picture frames are a few ideas to bring natural elements into your room. If you like a more minimalistic look, choose plants like cactus or succulents as a way to bring the outdoors in without losing the aesthetic look.

Curate Thoughtful Decor Elements:

Select decor elements that reflect your aesthetic vision and add personality to your space. Incorporate artwork, photographs, or wall hangings that resonate with you and enhance the overall ambiance of your bedroom. Display family photos or travel souvenirs that bring you joy and evoke fond memories. Photo frames come in any style imaginable to suit whatever decor style you like. Consider mixing and matching different textures in your decor items. Different materials and finishes create visual interest and dimension, whether it's a vintage-inspired rug, a statement mirror, or a sculptural vase filled with fresh flowers.

Declutter and Simplify:

A clutter-free environment is essential for creating a peaceful and serene bedroom retreat. Take the time to declutter and organize your space, keeping only the essentials and items that bring you joy. Invest in multifunctional furniture pieces like nightstands with drawers or under-bed storage containers to maximize space and keep essentials within reach. Invest in storage solutions such as baskets and bins to keep clutter at bay and maintain a sense of calm.
